where life has new words for soul
and muscles about to
and voices about to
and desire about to
there is always a surplus of meanings
to absorb the curve of my thoughts
until and until new names appear so I can
let go of my soul my tongue and my words
Nicole Brossard is a poet, novelist, and essayist who has published more than thirty books in French. She has recently begun writing some poetry in English, including the above poem. Twice a winner of the Governor General's Award for her poetry, she was also awarded the W.O. Mitchell prize in 2003.
